Over the centuries some have taken Jesus' harsh words literally--cutting off hands and removing eyes when there is sin. Yet sometimes the words of Jesus are easily dismissed as hyperbole. Regardless of where you fall on the continuum related to Jesus' words, God is deeply invested in human relationships. Rules and boundaries are important to human relationships, but it takes something extra to indicate that one is truly invested in relationships. Jesus teaches his followers what that extra investment looks like.
