The Gathering Life (Jeremiah 23: 1-6)

In an election season, it is tempting to believe that our ability to serve our neighbor in the world is tied to the political process. The Bible, the prophetic word is not given to support your political preferences. Actually the prophet Jeremiah delivers a word freeing God's followers to serve as gatherers in the world. Gathering for the church is not as easy as it used to be, and can no longer rest on the work of past leaders. Gathering is proactive, not reactive. Gathering is not reactive to a particular political ideology, but proactive in confidence of freedom in Christ. A fresh look at what it means to gather as God's people is demanded for this age. In some ways, the gathering life is simple--already at work. In other ways our abilities and gifts are stretched in new ways. But hearers of this word are reminded that we are built up by the great gatherer in Christ.
